Project Description

The embankment slip near Stonegate station in February 2014 was a deep seated rotational slip and caused 40m of the Down line between Wadhurst and Stonegate to be removed.

The remaining Up line remained intact but with a 3.0m high shear face in the embankment fill emanating from the sleeper ends.

As part of the embankment stabilisation scheme to which VEDA Associates were employed by Dyer and Butler Ltd as lead designer the Up line was to be temporarily supported such that engineering vehicles could deliver materials further slip locations on the line.

A gabion wall was designed and constructed supported on the piling mat. This allow the line to reopen to engineering vehicles within 10 days.
