MAC3 40F1 Pitsmoor – Retaining Wall Repairs
Pitsmoor, Sheffield
The existing cutting retaining wall required remediation due to large vertical and horizontal fractures. At GRIP5 stage, VEDA associates provided a cost engineering solution to reduce the build costs of the GRIP4 design and progressed the works with Dyer & Butler to completion of the project.
An existing cutting retaining wall was showing advanced signs of failure and was being monitored daily by Network Rail. The GRIP4 design was to provide a precast concrete stacked box solution to be installed to the face of the wall to act as a permanent shuttering for the mass concrete fill. At GRIP stage 5 VEDA Associates acted with Dyer & Butler to develop a more cost beneficial solution. The progressed solution was to provide a Hollow concrete block facing wall on mass concrete foundations that would allow a tiered progressive construction of the new mass concrete wall behind. At each stage of the tiered construction the existing construction worked as a working platform for the construction of the new facing wall and increased the safety factor of the existing wall in the temporary stage.
VEDA were appointed by Dyer and Butler to design a new mass concrete retaining wall to render the existing failing wall redundant.
A 3D laser survey of the structure mapped the structure and the co-ordinates of the fractures such that the wall could be monitored as the construction progressed.
The mass concrete retaining wall was constructed directly onto the mudstone formation of the existing retaining wall.
The tiered wall was constructed in 2.0m lifts, this enabled the wall to progressively be constructed and provide an increased factor of safety as the construction progressed.
The Stepoc shuttered facing walls built at 2.0m lifts provided sufficient strength to allow the mass fill behind to be poured without the requirement for significant temporary works.
The works were installed as proposed.
