Fenchurch Street Station - New Entrance & Congestion Relief
Fenchurch Street Station, London
VEDA Associates were employed by Spence as Lead Designers on the congestion relief scheme at Fenchurch Street. The multi-discipline scheme involved the construction of a new station entrance at Coopers Row, a new mezzanine floor above Coopers Row entrance to house the C2C staff mess facility, and the design of a new pedestrian staircase providing access from the existing concourse to subway level.
The structural design for the new station entrance and mess facility had to consider; not overloading the existing foundations, and the restricted building zone below the bridge beams. Our engineering team worked closely with the contractor and steel fabricator to develop a lightweight structural floor that could be installed in small components and provided sufficient head room for the first floor and second-floor services.
The installation of the main staircase required the removal of horizontal struts that spanned the width of the concourse and would appear to prop the end of the viaduct and bridge abutment. The original structure had been modified, hence the structural load path had to be determined before the removal of any structure. VEDA undertook an assessment of the existing structure that identified the sub-way level props to be load bearing, however, to verify our numerical assessment, we installed strain gauges on all the struts to monitor real-time strain. The strain results identified the magnitude of the loads and allowed VEDA to develop a temporary works system to safely remove the existing structure and install the new.
The relocation of the mess facilities to above the new entrance required a full diversion of the existing MEP service, new CMS and installation of new MEP plant. The SISS design required the removal of existing SISS assets, and the installation of new CCTV, CIS and help points necessary for the reconfigured areas.
